English for Upper-Intermediate Learners (B2) – Step 3 : Cleft Sentences for Clearer Communication

Overview
Curriculum

In this engaging MK’s English lesson, students will explore the power of cleft sentences — special sentence structures that let us emphasize exactly what we want to highlight. Through guided explanations, real-world examples, and interactive practice, learners will discover how to transform simple sentences like John broke the window into more expressive forms like It was John who broke the window or What broke was the window.

By the end of the lesson, students will:
✅ Understand when and why cleft sentences are used.
✅ Be able to form it-clefts (It was X who/that...) and what-clefts (What X did was...).
✅ Practice rewriting everyday sentences for emphasis and contrast.
✅ Apply cleft structures in short conversations and roleplays to sound more fluent and nuanced.

This lesson balances clear explanations with plenty of speaking practice — helping learners upgrade their sentence skills for storytelling, argument, and professional English.
