Adverbs of Frequency: How Often Do You Do Things?

Adverbs of frequency help us talk about how often we do something. They answer the question “How often?” and are used to describe habits, routines, and repeated actions. In this blog, we will learn about six common adverbs of frequency: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, and never. What Are Adverbs of Frequency?

Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens. Here are six important ones, ordered from most frequent to least frequent:

How to Use Adverbs of Frequency in a Sentence

1. With Simple Present Tense Verbs

We usually place adverbs of frequency before the main verb:

  • She always eats breakfast.
  • He sometimes plays video games.
  • We never skip English class!

2. With “Be” Verbs (am, is, are)

When using “be” verbs, put the adverb after the verb:

  • I am always on time.
  • She is often late.
  • They are never rude.

3. At the Beginning or End of a Sentence

Some adverbs of frequency, like sometimes and usually, can also go at the beginning or end of a sentence:

  • Sometimes, I go to the gym before work.
  • I go to the gym before work sometimes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

I eat always breakfast. → ✅ I always eat breakfast.He is rarely go to the beach. → ✅ He rarely goes to the beach.I never am late. → ✅ I am never late.
