EIKEN Grade 2 Lesson 1: Dealing with Problems

Overview
Curriculum

In this lesson, students will learn essential English for handling everyday problems, a theme that often appears in EIKEN Grade 2 reading passages, listening tasks, writing questions, and interview tests. The focus is on situations that students may encounter in daily life, such as scheduling issues, unexpected events, misunderstandings, or technical troubles — and on how to discuss these situations clearly and politely in English.

Through guided vocabulary building, grammar practice, reading comprehension, speaking, and writing tasks, students will develop the skills they need to:

  • Understand conversations and written texts about common problems and their solutions

  • Give advice using appropriate expressions

  • Explain what happened and how they responded

  • Express opinions and offer suggestions in interview-style and writing tasks

The lesson includes practical strategies for:

  • Recognizing key information (such as the cause of a problem or a suggested solution) in reading and listening

  • Using “should” and “had better” accurately to give advice

  • Responding clearly and confidently in speaking and writing tasks, even under test conditions

🌟 By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

✅ Recognize and use key vocabulary related to handling problems (e.g., appointment, cancel, solution, misunderstanding, contact, reschedule, suddenly)

✅ Apply common grammar structures for giving advice (using should and had better) and explaining solutions

✅ Read and understand short passages related to everyday challenges, identifying main ideas, details, and advice

✅ Respond to interview-style questions (e.g., “What do you do when you have a problem?”) with appropriate vocabulary and grammar

✅ Write short responses about personal experiences with problems and solutions, using target language
